Meaningful! The thing is, the further we go back in time, deep into the "old economy", the worse it gets. I have a feeling that the new wave of work/life balance and organizational culture "new work" is about to address the issues you mentioned. Not entirely, but up to a certain point. And I really hope so, cause I do not wish anyone to be in such a position. It would be a shame to waste an entire life with work :)
